SERVING TIME IN RICHMOND CITY JAIL AND WHAT GOES ON INSIDE…FROM A INMATES WIFE.
C.T. Woody, Sheriff of the Richmond City Jail took office in early 2006, since that time twenty-one people have died while in his custody.
The Richmond City Jail was built 48 years ago to incarcerate 880 inmates.
The jail is always extremely overcrowded and at times has held over twice the amount of inmates it was built to hold although normally there are around 1500.
The ceilings panels are falling down, due to the ceiling leaks in several different places and buckets are in place to catch the rain, making a manifest for the giant roaches crawling about.
Several of the windows are busted or completely gone through out the jail which gives the birds easy access to fly in and roost.
Some of the doors and locks are inoperable
The staff area is the only place that has air conditioning while the inside temperature of the cells which hold the inmates have been recorded to reach as high 120 degree’s
The sign in the cafeteria which once read ” no low talking in cafeteria” has been changed. The words “no low talking” have been scratched out and someone wrote in “NO TALKING” in the cafeteria. Not even a whisper….. and should you do so you will be taken out to the hallway to stand while the others eat their meal and you are given a dry bread and bologna sandwich which you have to take back to the dorm and eat.
You have to be “indigent” for 90 days before you can get any type of hygienic needs, soap, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.
You also have to be indigent for 90 days before you can get a ‘pink” envelope and stamp.
The only time you see a guard is when the mail is handed out or when it’s chow time.
Some inmates have homemade shanks (knifes) which they make from broken pieces of glass that came from the windows. They wrap a strip of sheet around one end and use it as a handle.
Some inmates have homemade mash (brew) hidden inside the 5 gallon containers.
Some inmates put Red Chilly Pepper in the other inmates nose while they are sleeping.
The third tier has 5 telephone for the inmates to use and anywhere from 120 to 150 inmates a day on the tier. They constantly fight over who is going to use the phone. They have two gangs in there that control the phones, they call themselves the East Side and West Side Gang. They say who can and can not use the phone, who someone can call, how long someone can talk on the phone, if they get to make a second call. The gangs say you have to pay them to use the phone, be it canteen items or “favors”.
They will stand beside you and listen to your conversation and click the phone off if they feel like it. Some of the inmates have been beaten to a bloody pulp over the phone. The blood is cleaned up and no one says anything for fear of being next. When the guards did find out a man was beaten up they took the man and threw him in the hole, but nothing happened to the gang members who beat up the inmate.
Inmates Canteen items are stolen all the time, dare say something? Want your ass beat by a gang of people while everyone else just stands there, go ahead say something about the person taking your coffee, stamps, paperback books, and yes, even your underwear. Dare to tell a guard, go ahead he’ll put the word out that your a punk and that you told it and turn his back while you get your ass beat worse the second time….some protection , what a joke.
One person doing something wrong can get the whole tier on lock down, not fair to others but you do as you are told or everyone suffers.
The jail is full of white racial discrimination…..Sheriff Woody tops the list.
I called the jail several times and spoke to Lt’s and Corporals and other officials about all of the problems going on in the Richmond City Jail. Their main concern was “who I was or what my husbands name was” which I refused to tell because we both know what would happen.
The other night took the straw and I finally had to break down and tell them who I was. I called and emailed the Va Governor, all the Delegates of the house, the Head of Department of Corrections, and every official there, and told them what is taking place inside the Richmond City Jail.
I got several responses back….in two hours time my emails were forwarded to Sheriff C.T. Woody. That evening the the Lt came in my husbands cell and said “ATW” which means all the way…or getting transferred out of there so he got up and was getting his things together and they told him not to take his stuff so he gave his items to another inmate.
The next think he knew he was in the office with 8 officials from the jail. They questioned him about my emails and wanted to know why he it wasn’t reported earlier.
